Ride Report - CSBA Pounding The Poconos Ride November 2, 2019

june1 intro

We give thanks to God for His wisdom and His Blessings….

The November ride for the SouthEast Pennsylvania chapter of the CSBA started off a bit cold. Most of the attendees had to brave temperatures around freezing on their way to the Starlite Diner. As a result, we took a little longer to begin our morning roundup and pre-ride meeting - while waiting for the bright sunshine to warm things up – and 20 of us rolled out about an hour late.

Much like the October rides, this time of year is fraught with the risk of “fall foliage” being strewn all over the roads, especially after some rain. Such was the case this month, as 36 hours beforehand, a powerful storm rolled through the area and left a lot of carnage behind it. As we discussed the “Rules Of The Road” and “Rules For The Ride”, we cautioned that there would probably be a lot of storm runoff, gravel, wet leaves, and wet roads along the route. Unfortunately, that exact combination of factors claimed the day for one of our riders in the lead group, early on in the route. Fortunately, because he was fully dressed in good riding gear, along with good slide protection for his bike, he was able to ride home with relatively minor injuries.

As we soldiered on through the day, though the Sun was shining bright, it was still a bit on the chilly side for most of the morning. As a result, a couple more riders decided to make an early stop and leave the ride to warm up and head home. This would turn out to be another advertisement for wearing the proper gear for the ride.

As the delays accrued and the traffic increased, we arrived at the planned lunch stop fairly late and found a nearly full parking lot. The restaurant was not able to take a group as large as ours so, fortunately, we had a backup plan from our recon ride 2 weeks ago in the form of an Italian restaurant and pizza shop in Broadheadsville, not far off the route.

Ride Report - CSBA Dive Into Delaware Ride October 5, 2019

june1 intro

We give thanks to God for His wisdom and His Blessings….

The October CSBA ride always faces the possibility of being a “wet leaves ride”. Fortunately, again, this year – because most of the leaves are still on their trees – we did not have much risk in that department as we prepared to ride toward Delaware for our rescheduled route from July.

Though the attendees had to endure a ride in to the diner around 40 degrees, we were quite fortunate with the weather for the day, as it eventually warmed up through the 50’s. During the pre-ride meeting, we discussed some of the special “features” of this route, which was supposed to include a detour around a recently chipped State highway. Because much of this route includes heavily traveled roads and revenue-generation opportunities for local law enforcement, we emphasized that this event would be more about the scenery and camaraderie than spirited riding.

We also suggested that riders unfamiliar with these roads join the “Chase” group, following Rusty. This advice went largely ignored and most of the 18 riders followed Rick in the Lead group, leaving 5 following Rusty.

One feature unique to this route, as the only one that runs primarily south, is that much of the day is spent riding directly into the Sun – and especially so in October. It was a beautiful day for a ride, but the bright sunlight made for some stark shadows in the tree-lined areas of the route.

Although Russ did a good job of outlining the rules of the road while discussing pace and cautioning the group on traffic flow and potential hazards, I think most of the crowd was itching to move. So when he established the 2 groups and he indicated we would be relatively sedate compared to the prior months ride, the lead group seemed to swell as we exited the Starlite. Alan and I had good communications via our Sena units at the start and rolled through the first several miles fairly smooth but when the group began to run at pace we spread out to more than 3/4 mile and we would lose contact. Lesson learned is we really need to try keeping groups to less than 10 if at all possible. The lead group dutifully followed me as I blew past a couple turns when my Scenic Moto maps app was lagging my actual ride position and I over shot the route’s required turn. In one case we enjoyed a 2 or 3 mile twisty detour having some fun in the process. There were tight lines and some nice pacing for everyone. We had an ‘incident’ with a road hazard that rendered our sweep’s bike out of commission. He didn’t go down but the bike got tweaked and he needed to roll carefully home after lunch.

Ride Report - CSBA Shamokin Screamer Ride September 7, 2019

june1 intro

We give thanks to God for His wisdom and His Blessings….

There are many ways I can open and attempt to describe this day to the reader – but I’ll just simply say -FANTASTIC!  The word went out that the CSBA was hosting our “Shamokin Screamer” event and riders came out to support us – and support us they did.  We were 46 deep in the ranks at the start of our ride.

With so much to cover, I’m going to give this report a slightly different format.  I’ll give my view from the top and then I’m going to poll our ride leaders and let them add their experiences in a section of their own.  This way we can capture more of what really happened this day.   Along with myself, we had 4 other ride groups:  Chris, Rick, Russ and Ana – Hats off to them and everyone that pitched in and help make what was our largest event to date such a success.

John’s Update (Group 1):

So, in typical fashion, after everyone was present and accounted for, I presented our Rules for the Road and Ride.  Soon thereafter, we split up into 5 groups – and I was especially careful to make sure everyone had a group, knew their leader and sweeper.  This later become very important as the day went on.    We geared up, and started out – however within 5 miles of the start – we had our first tumble.  Our man Shawn was caught by a quick downhill blind left-hander that caused him to high side – to his defense, we’d had many caught at this quick turn that comes up on you quickly – we’re just thankful that he’s ok.  Ben stayed with his bud to make sure he was ok – we got word that he later visited the hospital, just to make sure.  He hit pretty hard, but thankfully he was fully geared up – his new 636 took a beating though, but that is repairable.   A big shout-out goes to Ben for stepping up and staying with Shawn.  We missed you both today on the ride.

During our morning jaunt, I found myself in a little trouble on some bad pavement (I believe Cory caught it on video).  I entered a left hander a little too hot, applied brake and my back tire was locking up on gravel – I wrestled the Mothership in that turn and managed to recover and not go off the road.  That was a close one for me – just goes to show the Screamer will claim anyone who’s not paying attention.   My morning otherwise was uneventful with the exception of Martin running out of gas.  He dropped to Rick’s group and he’ll cover that in his section of the report.

Ride Report - CSBA Pocono Screamer Ride June 8, 2019

june1 intro

We give thanks to God for His wisdom and His Blessings….

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something….. well that last one can be whatever you want it to be today, but it was anything from “Blue” as people were in great spirits and ready to ride! I would best describe today’s ride as “Epic”, but more on why that designation later in this report.

This ride was also pushed back 1 week. We had several challenges to deal with, and as we always do – we collectively decided it was best to postpone 1 week to overcome them. I know this ride is a favorite among many, so we apologize again to our friends, but we want our rides to provide an organized experience that all can enjoy, not just a select few – so we had to slide the date.

Chris A. (NJ) wanted to be fresh for this ride, so he came out the night before and stayed with me so he could be ready for the day. I was surprised not to see Zsolt among the ranks – he was missed. I did see new faces (Something new) was is always nice. I didn’t catch everyone’s names, but I’ll be sure to prior to our next ride and include them (here) on this report. We had 26 riders present and accounted for, so the message was clear – we’re ready to ride! Russ overcame all his challenges from the previous week, and Rick J was on deck, ready to lead – so we had three groups. We started the day also with two ladies (Annette and Lindsey), but Jojo and Lindsey had to break off once we reached the lunch spot for family demands. Hans and some of the ON2 crew showed up to rep their team. Derek ran into a little trouble on his Busa and broke his mirror, but I later heard he was ok. He promised he would be back, but his team came together and left together after the lunch spot. We had the usual suspects otherwise (Chris H, Russ's new friend Chris, Jason, Geoff and 2 of his buds, a new friend from DE and his brother, Alan, Rick J, and his son’s bud, and Bob) along with an honorable mention for Greg. Greg has not been able to ride with us for some time now but has shown his support by coming down to rides and having fellowship with us prior to our rides. I was very happy to see him in gear and ready to ride this day. The something old (me) was ready to get it in, so we assembled for our morning meeting and then we were ready to hit it.

Ride Report - CSBA Blue Mountain Run May 11, 2019

may2019 01 intro

We give thanks to God for His wisdom and His Blessings….

Well where do we begin…The 2019 CSBA Blue Mountain Run was scheduled to take place on May 4, however a series of events during the weeks leading up to that date resulted in the need to postpone the ride until May 11.   While reconning the route with Russ about two weeks prior to ride day and only about a quarter of the way through the route, Russ noticed that his fork seals had begun leaking all over his brake caliper and onto his boots.   Amazingly Russ continued on with the recon and we completed the route, however that bike would be out of commission afterwards until it would be repaired.   Luckily Russ was able to borrow his brother’s bike and a week later, Russ decided to do another recon of the route, as we had decided to make some road adjustments to the original route we ran the week prior.  As he completed the route and began to head for home, a driver in a car honked and approached him at a red light to let him know that his rear brake light was not working.  As it would turn out, the light was not working because the entire tail light assembly, including the license plate was missing and had apparently fallen off somewhere during the ride.  Now that bike was no longer able to be used for the ride and his third bike at home needed a new water pump.   Frustrated with three bikes down and with the likelihood that neither of them would be ready in time for the ride, Russ notified me that he would not be able to attend this one.  Then I received a text from Mark that his bike was also getting fork seals replaced and that he was unsure about whether or not he would have it back in time for the ride.   Meanwhile John was out of town on a business trip and was fairly certain that he would not be flying home in time to make it.   So we were down 3 out of 4 ride leaders just a couple days before the event and with 20+ riders expected to attend, we decided to postpone it a week for the safety and enjoyment of everyone.  Unfortunately not everyone who planned to attend the original date could make the new date.

Ride Report - CSBA Leap Around Lancaster April 6, 2019

group shot intro

We give thanks to God for His wisdom and His Blessings….

The one thing we can state with authority is there is never a dull time to be had at a CSBA ride event. This was our season opener, and our friends came out to be present and accounted for. We started the day with 32 pilots and a few drop-in guests. We were also blessed to have one of our long-term members visiting us from the Carolinas to join us for the day (Kairi and his brother Julien) along with some new faces within the ranks, which is always welcome. A very handsome bunch I must say!

We did have a few minor incidents that are worthy of reporting. One of our new riders experienced a failure on his clutch cable and therefore was unable to complete the ride with us. Matko was only able to join us for a short period of time, and broke off and left us mid-morning. We also had a few other riders that wanted to venture off and meet back up with us at the lunch stop.

An epic fail on my watch happened as my Garmin GPS unit finally went DOA, just as I rolled up to the ride. We tried to hard splice it, but all I managed to do was blow-up my auxiliary connection. (I would later visit with Mike to get it fixed) Our day started as a typical ride day would – we chatted, reviewed the rules of the ride and rules of the road, and then broke up into groups.
